MacShayla Smith was born and raised in Athens. She attended Alps Road Elementary, Clarke Middle and will soon graduate from Clarke Central High School. During high school MacShayla played volleyball and participated in the Great Promise Partnership (GPP), a public-private partnership that offers students a chance to get work experience while still in school. Through GPP MacShayla worked part of the day and attended classes at CCHS during part of the day. She worked at the Eaton Corporation and most recently at Carrier Transicold, until the recent shelter in place mandate. Currently MacShayla works at Piggly Wiggly. After graduation, MacShayla plans to attend Athens Technical College to earn a degree in Business Management and hopes to continue to work at Carrier. She’d like to eventually be a Dental Hygienist. MacShayla lives on the Westside of Athens with her mom Chiquitta and their dog King. She has two older brothers, Fredrick and Mackee.
What was your favorite class in high school?
This shout out is to Coach [Aaron] Cavin. My favorite class was math with him. We used to have fun, we learned a lot and all my friends were in it. He was a cool teacher. I liked him a lot. Then, my second favorite class was Literature with Ms. [Erin] Horton.
When we are not sheltering in place, what do you love to do in Athens?
I like to go shopping. That is my number one favorite thing to do. I like to shop at every mall there is. I can’t deny one mall. And, I go to yard sales too.
What are you doing with all of this extra time at home?
I had been doing my schoolwork. I am done with all of my school work, and I passed all of my classes. So, I am just waiting on our graduation! That is what I was doing, but I don’t know what I am going to do now. Live life.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would go to Maldives. I want to go there so bad! I am going to go there one day in life. It is a beach town where the houses sit on top of the water. The water is clear. It just looks like a great getaway spot.
If you could see any musician or band, anywhere, who would it be and where?
Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Lefteye Lopez from TLC really anywhere.
If you could have lunch with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and where would you eat lunch?
My grandma, Glenda Smith, and I would take her to Inoko’s here in Athens where they cook in front of you.
If you could give advice to someone just entering high school, what would you tell them?
I would tell them to go to class, do your work and hang out with your friends after school.
What is your favorite movie or series?
I like watching Martin.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
Just stay focused and don’t let anyone distract you.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Rich. A rich person. Getting that money.
What three words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word “home”?
Comfort, safe and peace.
