The artist known as Kxng Blanco was born in Athens, GA. He attended Gaines, Barnett Shoals, and Cleveland Road elementary schools, Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle and Clarke Central High School. He attended the University of North Georgia, but his “passion for music overpowered his passion to graduate” and he left to pursue that passion. In 2016 he dropped his first song and then a few months later his first mixtape, titled 12/21, his birthdate and symbolic of the birth of his music. Every year since then he has released new music, now totaling three mix tapes and four albums. He is currently working on his fifth album (LvrBoy II). Kxng Blanco headlined the AthFest Music & Arts Festival in 2019, which was a big highlight for him, having grown up in Athens and watching that stage over the years. He was nominated for Album of the Year at that year’s Flagpole Music Awards and performed that night at the awards ceremony. He was the youngest ever headliner at PopFest and is featured on a READ poster at the ACC Library. Kxng Blanco has also performed at several local elementary, middle and high schools through his manager Montu Miller of AthFactor Entertainment. His stage name was inspired by a nickname he gave himself, inspired by the Biggie Smalls lyric, “tell em Blanco sent you.” He added Kxng to create his stage name when he started performing. Kxng Blanco works as a Sound Engineer at GA Pro Studios. He lives on the West Side with his mom, Wanda, and sister, Jaquita.
What do you love most about your career?
I would really just say the fans, like knowing that I have people waiting to see what’s next for me and just want to see me prosper. It just gives me the extra boost to keep going.
What is your favorite thing to do in Athens?
I just love being downtown, in the atmosphere after a show, on a Saturday or Friday night.
Do you have a favorite venue that you like to hear music or perform at?
The closest I have gotten to rap rock star feeling as far as being treated well, and the stage and just how big the venue is was at the 40 Watt. The staff there has really been great to me since I was like seventeen years old, before I was even legal.
If you could see any musician or band anywhere who would it be and where?
I would probably bring back Biggie just to see if anything had changed in the hip hop world. I wonder if bringing Biggie back, would he be as big. Would he still be looked at as as much of a mogul or would he be looked at as a hip hop executive or label executive or something. I would probably want to see him at The Staples Center just because he got killed in LA and he never really got to feel that LA love.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in their music career?
It is not going to happen overnight, but the things you do to get to the next step is what is going to show people how serious you are about your music, like how bad you want it. Show these folks how bad you want it and they are going to feel you. If the music is up to par, and you want it as bad as you want, it is going to grow anyway with you.
Do you have a favorite movie or remember the first movie you saw in a movie theatre?
I would say my favorite movie would probably be Friday with Ice Cube. All of them, the whole series really; I haven’t really seen one that was bad.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would probably just go off to a Fiji island or something like that just so I can see if they sell Fiji water in Fiji.
What is something interesting about you that most people might not know?
I haven’t always been confident about being fat. Like, my persona is the fat confident dude; I show my stomach in shows and rap about being fat. It is all because at one point, I didn’t even want to acknowledge it, you know? This confidence hasn’t always been here.
If you could put any message on a billboard, what would you put?
Welcome to Athens, Home of Kxng Blanco.
If you could have lunch with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and where?
It would be with Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion.
What three words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word “home”?
Athens, Mama and comfort.
